Volunteers work with Mary Forbes to create a Stream of Dreams mural. The salmon were painted by children at the Marsh Magic Festival in 2024 and remind us how important it is to protect our local watershed

Volunteers use donated material to re-build the railings along Otter Point Trail.

We are always building and maintaining infrastructure at Scout Island. When you visit the Nature Centre, you will see new boardwalks on the Willow Trail and at Otter Point.  In the future you will see new bridges going to Otter point and the far island.

If you would like to help by donating materials for these projects and others, please contact the Nature Centre Manager at 250-398-8532 or manager@scoutisland.ca. Charitable receipts will be issued for each donation.

Volunteering is rewarding. Volunteer time at Scout Island averages 4000 hours per year! A variety of volunteer opportunities are available, such as:

  • Nature Centre hosts
  • Trail maintenance and planting projects
  • Invasive species removal
  • Helping with displays and art work in the Nature House

All that is required is an interest in natural history and a love of the outdoors (but, we are also happy to train you if you want to be more of an expert). Our Facebook page will have volunteer opportunities posted when they arise – though you are always
welcome to come in and fill out a volunteer contact form.

Contact the Nature Centre Manager (manager@scoutisland.ca) for more information.

Volunteer, Jim Buckland, was removes invasive weeds such as burdock root and thistle. In 2025, he put in over 240 hours pulling invasive weeds.

We are so grateful for the many individual community members and businesses who donate their time, funding and ideas. Scout Island Nature Centre could not continue to offer the natural history programs, the tonic of wilderness to our community or the protected space for wildlife in our urban setting without their support.
